Brett Ratner is no longer attached to the remake of Conan, according to the film’s producer Joe Gatta. Gatta told Empire: “We’re currently in the process of hiring a director. For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner and, for more timing issues than anything else, we had to part ways with Brett. “We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn’t work.” Then he added, hinting that the door was not firmly closed on Ratner: “But you never know what can happen.” Gatta said that work would first press ahead on Conan and then on the related project Red Sonja: “We have a potential start-date on Conan of August 24. And we’ll be shooting in Bulgaria. I would say though the emphasis is on Conan – it’s our crown jewel here at the company and that will be the leader. “Red Sonja probably won’t happen until next year, as far as making it goes. So we want to launch Conan and reinvent the franchise.” He added: “We’ll have an open casting call: as soon as we hire our director the search is on.” Ratner (pictured at top) has had a rather uncertain association with the Conan movie. Last November it was reported that he was in final negotiations to direct the film but then Ratner himself clarified that it was only a development deal. Then, last month, he said he was actively attached to the movie. Rose McGowan is set to star as Red Sonja, as reported last year. The character first appeared in a Conan the Barbarian comic published by Marvel, and was loosely based on the Red Sonya (spelled with a ‘y’) in a short story by Ron E. Howard, the creator of Conan. |

As first mentioned back in 2007, film director Robert Rodriguez has been trying to remake the Jane Fonda classic, Barbarella. Months later reports surfaced that Universal Studios backed out of the deal as a result of Rose McGowan starring in the flick, though Rodriguez denied that was the real reason, blaming it solely on financial issues. But, now MTV is confirming that the Barbarella remake is officially over. During a recent chat with Rodriguez, the director confirmed the movie is no longer a go. Rodriguez stated:

A few weeks ago, it was announced that the ever-busy Robert Rodriguez was working on a script to revive the Predator franchise, titled appropriately, Predators. BoxOfficeMojo.com has updated their release schedule pitting Rodriguez’s Predators film at a release date of July 9th, 2010! No word on whether starlet and Rodriguez fiance, Rose McGowan will play a lethal predator that wreaks adultery on otherwise happy marriages in the revival of the franchise. Predators does mark the third supposed big-budget theatrical release for Rodriguez in 2010 including Nerveracker and the newly announced, Machete for Dimension films. |

Sometimes a little “work” doesn’t work in Hollywood. Christina Ricci and Emile Hirsch will tear up the screen next summer in a live-action remake of the old “Speed Racer” cartoon. But a source close to the writer/directors, the Wachowski siblings, tells us their earlier choices were Rose McGowan and Zac Efron. McGowan, 34, has admitted to having plastic surgery for an eye injury related to a car accident. But casting skeptics suspect she has had much more done, and that it cost her the role. “The studio felt like she was hard to recognize and worried that by the time the movie hit theaters, fans might not know who she was,” says our insider. A rep for the actress said “she was not pursuing this role.” Efron, meanwhile, may be taking over the world with the “High School Musical” franchise, but his youth worked against him for the part of Speed. “During his auditions, Zac never connected to the romantic lead in the reading,” says our source. “By the second round, the casting crew didn’t feel he was believable as a leading man/hero.” |
