Megan Fox to Replace Rose McGowan as Red Sonja
Posted by Megan • On April 06, 2010 • 1 Comment

“Red Sonja,” produced by Robert Rodriguez and starring ex-fiancé Rose McGowan, has stumbled upon yet another huge bump in the road. In fact, this one is so big that the entire project is about to be overhauled, starting with the script and ending with the leading actress. McGowan is out and an offer has been made to Megan Fox, Empire Online informs.

Though this was a project that got off the ground with much difficulty, last we heard about it, everything was going just swell. Then, McGowan injured herself pretty badly while shooting for it, required surgery and had to take some time out. And then she broke up from Robert Rodriguez and talk started making the rounds that her new-found love of plastic surgery was costing her role after role. Truth being told, this most recent report could be totally unrelated to McGowan and Rodriguez calling it quits on their much-mediated romance.

A possible replacement for her seems to have been found in the person of Megan Fox. “According to Pajiba’s source, the shadowy and mysterious Hollywood Cog, the offer is out to Megan Fox, who to be fair, is a bit closer in age to the ‘innocent teenager who metamorphosizes into an unparalleled warrior’ than the 36-year-old Rose (Brigitte Nielsen was 22 for the 1985 version). The word on the street is that the project as it previously existed has basically been scrapped, with director Doug Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame) also departing, and new writers being sought to draft further drafts of David N White’s script,” Empire says.

Of the old cast, only Rodriguez seems to have remained attached. “Robert Rodriguez does still seem to be attached as producer though. He told MTV not long ago that Red Sonja’s future depended on the box-office performance of Conan. But re-branding the package as a potential solo franchise for the hot-but-untested Fox (Jennifer’s Body was a two-hander; Transformers’ human performers are irrelevant) might just, we’re thinking, make the Hollywood suits that much more inclined to sign some cheques,” the same movie-oriented e-zine goes on to say.

As of now, “Red Sonja” is in what is known as production limbo. Though clearly one of those projects that target a niche fanbase, the film did manage to get even non-fans interested, especially after the teaser poster with Rose McGowan was released a while back. Whether the film will ever get to see the light of day is anybody’s guess right now.

‘RED SONJA’ MOVIE NEWS

Brett Ratner is no longer attached to the remake of Conan, according to the film’s producer Joe Gatta.

Gatta told Empire: “We’re currently in the process of hiring a director. For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner and, for more timing issues than anything else, we had to part ways with Brett.

“We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn’t work.”

Then he added, hinting that the door was not firmly closed on Ratner: “But you never know what can happen.”

Gatta said that work would first press ahead on Conan and then on the related project Red Sonja: “We have a potential start-date on Conan of August 24. And we’ll be shooting in Bulgaria. I would say though the emphasis is on Conan – it’s our crown jewel here at the company and that will be the leader.

“Red Sonja probably won’t happen until next year, as far as making it goes. So we want to launch Conan and reinvent the franchise.”

He added: “We’ll have an open casting call: as soon as we hire our director the search is on.”

Ratner (pictured at top) has had a rather uncertain association with the Conan movie. Last November it was reported that he was in final negotiations to direct the film but then Ratner himself clarified that it was only a development deal. Then, last month, he said he was actively attached to the movie.

Rose McGowan is set to star as Red Sonja, as reported last year. The character first appeared in a Conan the Barbarian comic published by Marvel, and was loosely based on the Red Sonya (spelled with a ‘y’) in a short story by Ron E. Howard, the creator of Conan.

‘BARBARELLA’ REMAKE OFFICIALLY NO-GO
Posted by Megan • On May 07, 2009 • No Comments

As first mentioned back in 2007, film director Robert Rodriguez has been trying to remake the Jane Fonda classic, Barbarella.

Months later reports surfaced that Universal Studios backed out of the deal as a result of Rose McGowan starring in the flick, though Rodriguez denied that was the real reason, blaming it solely on financial issues.

But, now MTV is confirming that the Barbarella remake is officially over. During a recent chat with Rodriguez, the director confirmed the movie is no longer a go.

Rodriguez stated:

“It came to the point where [a company from] Germany offered us a $70 million budget, which would have been by far the biggest budget I ever would have had for a movie. But I had to shoot it in Germany and post it in Germany. Nothing against Germany, but I have five kids and I was like, ‘God, I don’t know if we can do that. I don’t know if I can be away that long.’

It was a real bummer. We had all this artwork and screen tests of what it would look like. It was a really cool, R-rated, sexy—almost like that [1981 animated] movie, ‘Heavy Metal’—version of a ‘Star Wars’ movie. Something that no one ever could get to see. It was gonna be really great.”

PREDATOR FRANCHISE REVIVED
Posted by Megan • On May 02, 2009 • No Comments

A few weeks ago, it was announced that the ever-busy Robert Rodriguez was working on a script to revive the Predator franchise, titled appropriately, Predators. BoxOfficeMojo.com has updated their release schedule pitting Rodriguez’s Predators film at a release date of July 9th, 2010! No word on whether starlet and Rodriguez fiance, Rose McGowan will play a lethal predator that wreaks adultery on otherwise happy marriages in the revival of the franchise.

Predators does mark the third supposed big-budget theatrical release for Rodriguez in 2010 including Nerveracker and the newly announced, Machete for Dimension films.
